OFFICIALS

Every club needs Officials. All clubs are required to provide a team of officials for every competitive match they take part in. Indeed most leagues award points to clubs providing the correct number of qualified officials - points which can make (and in recent years at Notts have made) a difference to promotion or relegation. There are 4 types of officials - Track, Field, Match and Administrative.

TRACK OFFICIALS

Track officials include Starters/Marksmen, Timekeepers and Track Judges.

FIELD OFFICIALS

Field Officials cover all 8 field events - Jumping events (High jump, long jump, triple jump and pole vault) and throwing events (Javelin, discus, hammer and shot).

MATCH OFFICIALS

Clubs that host or organise competitions must appoint at least a Track Referee and a Field Referee. Depending on the size and status of the competition it may also be necessary to appoint a Clerk of the Course and a Technical Manager for both Track and Field. Health and Safety are a primary concern of these officials.

ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICIALS

Organising clubs also need to provide back up support to carry out the duties of Announcer, Assembly Stewards, seeding and recording results.

TESTING AND GRADING OF OFFICIALS

UK Athletics are currently reviewing the procedure for the recruitment, training, development and support of officials. The disciplines for graded officials are Field Judges, Starters/Marksmen, Timekeepers and Track Judges. The initial grade for qualified officials is Grade 4. This is currently achieved by gaining at least 65% in a written examination paper. Grades 3 and 2 are achieved following appropriate experience and satisfactory reports from higher graded officials. Grade 1 officials are also required to pass an advanced examination. The new system will introduce “Officials’ Assistants” that will not require candidates to pass an examination, but will encourage “volunteers” to gain experience whilst supporting higher graded officials. These volunteers will be registered as “Level 1” Officials. Current Grade 4 Officials will become “Level 2”; Grade 3 Officials will become “Level 3” and so on.
